Finally, a comprehensive guide to understanding the bill of material and routing types available in JDE Manufacturing, besides “M-type” (standard). In this article, Pat Martino lists and defines the various types for both BOMs and Item Routings, including examples of when you want to step out of the M-type box.

Let's see... on the one hand, I could use item substitution. On the other hand, I could just delete the old item off the BOM. Then on the other hand... Oh, wait. I only have two hands. You'll need more than two hands to consider the possibilities for retiring a component and replacing it on open BOMs. Pat Martino shows how to think this through without utterly confusing your MRP and while retaining item history. It's up to you, really, which way you choose, but at least now you'll have a basis for making the right call.

What do you do when you have a duplicate demand problem, but running MRP to correct each problem is not an option, and MRP's standard net change approach won't fit the bill either? That was the problem Mike Wright and his team were challenged with--coming up with an MRP net change approach that was customized to meet their company's needs, but one that wasn't so loaded with custom code that it created a host of other problems. In this article, Mike documents the final solution, including code that you can adapt to meet your company's specific net change needs.

Okay, I have Manufacturing and I have Sales Order Configurator. I need some parts from one and some parts from the other, and I need them to work together. Can this be done? Thom Blake was faced with this challenge, and with a strong development team and dedicated business function team, a custom solution was the result. The solution is to allow the Sales Order Configurator to drive Manufacturing processes for unique, on-demand products. In short, you configure an item as a sales order is created, and this item is then converted into a standard manufactured and inventoried item.

Most companies look at the supply chain in terms of what is happening inside the company and with their immediate customers and vendors. But to improve profitability in these tough economic times consider the entire extended supply chain. We sell to our customers who sell to distributors, who sell to retail outlets, who sell to the ultimate consumer. Our vendors buy from their vendors, who buy from their vendors who buy from the provider of raw materials. You get the picture. A lot has been written about the extended supply chain, much of it is full of cliché and hot air. Here's the real deal. Plus more to come...
