If we all got paid exactly the same every single payday, we wouldn't need this new feature in 9.1. But there are often variations in pay rate based on any number of circumstances. Component Pay allows us to set up these variables to automatically adjust the base pay rate accordingly. This article walks us through the setup, then follows the process through the payroll run.

Pesky payroll errors crop up each time payroll is run. Wouldn't it be nice to track and correct those errors before they impact your employees' checks? Since payroll errors are client-specific, there is no one-size-fits-all error prevention solution for JD Edwards. But there are ways to minimize payroll errors, as Buffy Dorpinghaus demonstrates. Buffy developed a solution for one of her clients, using a combination of standard and custom reports and institutional knowledge. She documented the process she used, examples of the errors they needed to find, and her best practices--all of which led to a 47% reduction in payroll errors for this client.

Payroll Journal errors give new meaning to the term "pay it forward". If there's an error in the Pro-Forma journal form, it's likely that it will remain there, all the way to the GL batch, especially if there isn't time to locate and fix the error before the final update. Thomas Nellissery understands the pain. That's why he's sharing some of his favorite tips for troubleshooting common Payroll journal errors and resolving them quickly.

JD Edwards Competencies module is a great tool for defining job skills requirements and tracking employee performance against those skills. You can easily get carried away with the setup, though, and make life harder for yourself than it needs to be. So it's good to understand how the job definitions, groupings, and competencies work together. This article by Claire Hensler makes for an excellent guide to planning your overall design. Claire provides a detailed overview of the modules; along the way, she shares her tips for keeping the functionality from becoming too complex.
